Free of cars

I don’t live in a city, but it would be nice, I think, if you could get about without the use of a car.

If everybody who was fit and able left their cars at home if it is only them who needs it, then congestion would be a thing of the past. If shopping and the school run was done on foot, by bicycle or by public transport rather than jumping in the car for journeys less than a mile, the world would be a cleaner place, there would be no panic when there are too few places to park, and everyone would benefit from fresh air in more ways than one.

Leave the streets for drivers who need it because they need to go a distance, are disabled in some way or who has a passenger who is.

I’m not disabled, but I am a driver who walks or cycles to work, and it’s all very well for me to say, I know, but those who can’t drive either because of age or health reasons may find they have greater opportunity to travel freely because there’s more of a demand for public transport.

That may work in rural areas too.
